Internal
Audit

The Internal Audit programme is perfect for anyone who wants to discover the inside workings of a world-leading bank. You’ll get the chance to make connections and share ideas with Internal Audit colleagues from around the globe, digging deeply into the complex processes that make our bank function.

The role of Internal Audit is to provide independent assurance that an organisation’s risk management, governance and internal control processes are operating effectively. It means Internal Audit staff are always highly skilled with an inside-out understanding of risk management and control. As a Graduate Auditor, you’ll get to research and evaluate different areas of the bank, test processes and controls, and recommend improvements in order to develop the skills we need.

The ability and knowledge you’ll pick up on the programme will enable you to rise to almost any challenge. You’ll also be able to raise your profile at all levels of the bank, sometimes even the most senior ones. What’s more, with our support and sponsorship you can complete your ACCA, ACA or CISA qualification.

Location

Internal Audit is based at our Head Office in London but, because we do audits all over the country, you can expect to spend a fair amount of time outside the city. Exactly how much time will depend on the size and nature of each individual audit. However, while you’re away, we’ll provide you with hotel accommodation and an evening meal, pay for any travelling costs and give you an additional cash allowance.

What we look for in you

To be considered for this programme, you must expect to gain or already have a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in areas such as Finance, Accounting, IT, Business or another subject with a large amount of financial or accounting content. In addition, you’ll need to bring a basic understanding of the financial services industry, lots of drive and initiative, and an open mind when it comes to new ideas.

You'll join us as a Graduate Auditor and will benefit from a structured development programme which is designed to give you a broad understanding of the key parts of our organisation. This will include completing short work placements and working alongside more experienced auditors across a number of different UK Internal Audit teams.

As Internal Audit is a global function, you can also expect to gain experience alongside Spanish colleagues from the wider Group.

We involve Graduate Auditors in a wide range of work, including the review and evaluation of different parts of the Santander business as well as the testing and evaluation of processes and controls. You’ll also make recommendations for improvements.

Perform well during the programme, and you can expect to be promoted to Junior Auditor. So as you can see, from day one you’ll be a valued member of the department with the potential to make real and rapid progress.

To begin with, you'll attend the same induction programme as all other Santander UK graduates. Then you’ll start your structured development programme as a Graduate Auditor.

Your induction to Internal Audit includes work shadowing and placements in key parts of Santander such as the branch network and other customer contact areas. You'll work with different audit teams in different places and you'll be given in-house training. For example, audit methodology, quality assurance and UK regulation.

The training will also help you to develop the 'soft' skills you'll need to be an effective auditor. These include negotiation and influencing skills, report writing, communicating and assertiveness. We’ll make sure you have a mentor and buddy who’ll be there to give you further advice and guidance. And you could attend a dedicated career development programme which will help you to identify your strengths and areas for further development, as well as supporting you in planning the next steps in your career.

All of our graduates participate in a number of core learning experiences. These are designed to develop your interpersonal skills and help prepare you for your first role managing others. Core learning is delivered through a blend of online and face-to-face training in modules covering areas such as an introduction to leadership and management; fundamentals of managing high performance teams; and essential communication and interpersonal skills.

In addition to this, you could be invited to undertake various activities throughout the programme, such as:

  • An induction to your business
  • An induction to your division
  • An induction to the wider Santander Group
  • The allocation of your own mentor and buddy
  • Meetings with members of the Executive Committee
  • Involvement in cross-divisional project work
  • Graduate-specific events
  • The production and publication of our graduate magazine

All of our Graduate Auditors are assessed on their individual performance and behaviours. As long as you demonstrate the required level of skills and behaviours and you have the passion and enthusiasm to succeed, then Santander UK could be perfect for you.
