Finance

If you want to blaze trails in the financial industry, this is the place to start. We’ll give you unparalleled accounting experience, including everything from core financial accounting to complex modelling. We’ll sharpen your analytical and presentation abilities. And we’ll show you how to manage colleagues and clients in a way that will set an example for others to follow.

This programme is at the heart of our dynamic and progressive business. It offers outstanding career development opportunities, hands-on work experience and a training programme like no other – one that will make you both technically astute and commercially aware. Join us here, and you’ll undertake four rotations, giving you a broad and varied experience of Santander.

Working in a clearly defined job area, you'll obtain and analyse data for modelling, test assumptions, or investigate technical problems. You'll also provide technical support and advice to the business, helping to implement new standards in low risk areas and acting as the reference point for queries. You’ll help to ensure our financial control framework is always followed, and that well-informed business decisions are made. In the process, you’ll develop your relationship building skills.

Then in your final year, you’ll concentrate on developing in-depth experience and skills in a more specialised area.

During the scheme you’ll also have access to leadership training and a series of personal development modules that will build on your potential and help transform you into a leader or technical expert. We’ll even support and sponsor you to complete your ACCA or CIMA qualification.

Most of the placements are based at our Head Office in London.

What we look for in you

To be considered here, you’ll need to have or expect to gain a 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Finance, Accounting, Business or another subject with significant financial or accounting content. We also encourage those with degrees in numerical subjects to apply, though we’ll need to see evidence of your business acumen.

To give you an idea of the areas in which you'll gain exceptional experience, here are the business areas you could find yourself working in during the scheme:

Income Analysis is where you'll produce consolidated income reports for Santander management, reviewing and challenging monthly income numbers. We’ll expect you to produce business monthly Profit and Loss accounts, and develop financial models to review and forecast product non-interest income and net interest income. In this role, you’ll develop an understanding of how banks generate and calculate income, as well as developing your analytical skills.

In Group Reporting, you’ll be joining the team that’s the central collection point for all statutory financial data. This role involves planning and coordinating Profit and Loss, balance sheets, off balance sheets and supplementary data, along with subsequent reporting to Santander and UK regulators. You’ll also be involved in collecting financial data disclosed in the quarterly, half yearly and annual reports, gaining a good understanding of our group accounting systems and statutory reporting requirements.

The Treasury Reporting team manages the reporting of all treasury subsidiaries’ statutory financial results to Group Reporting. You’ll be assisting with the detailed review of all accounting entries, providing commentary to explain significant activity and variances, as well as supporting analysis for the annual accounts. It’s an opportunity to develop your technical/statutory reporting skills, gain an understanding of our intercompany processes and build relationships with people in the business, as well as external audit staff

It’s vital that we meet all our regulatory requirements – and that’s where Regulatory Reporting come in. Join this team, and you’ll be helping to produce and distribute daily, weekly and monthly reports as well as undertaking a range of ad hoc analyses to reconcile differences, answer queries, and identify and implement improvements to our reports and processes. It’s an opportunity to develop your analytical skills and gain an understanding of regulatory capital reporting, credit and market risk.

Management Information will provide you with a high level overview of the type of reports and presentations that are reviewed by the most senior executives in our organisation. You'll learn the key disciplines required to consolidate, understand and communicate information from a large number of sources – often to tight deadlines. This is an exciting area of finance given that all output is reviewed in detail by the Financial Controller and CEO. In this role you’ll develop a good overall understanding of our financial and business performance, and how retail banking works.

In the Pricing team, you’ll contribute to detailed financial analysis on profitability, help to evaluate new product proposals and report retail product margins. Here, you'll be working closely with Marketing, Risk and other Finance teams to deliver projects successfully and inform business decision making. In this small and dynamic team, you’ll quickly learn how to demonstrate rational justifications for assumptions with supportive, well-analysed evidence. In this rotation, you’ll develop strong modelling and analytical skills, as well as building business relationships with non-finance staff.

The role in Economics is designed to provide you with an introduction and some insight into how economic information and analysis is used by the business. More broadly, the Economics team is responsible for monitoring trends in the economy and major retail business areas, and for alerting business stakeholders to any major news and changes within those areas. You can expect to complete specific projects and to get involved in the day-to-day work of the team.

Developing your skills is as important to us as it is to you. Throughout your career, you’ll receive both formal and 'on-the-job' training, giving you the knowledge and experience you need to realise your full potential.

When you join, you’ll receive a warm welcome and a thorough induction into the UK business. As part of this, you’ll also receive a more local induction and eventually, after a period of time, we’ll broaden your induction to the wider Santander Group.

All of our graduates participate in a number of core learning experiences. These are designed to develop your interpersonal skills and help prepare you for your first role managing others. Core learning is delivered through a blend of online and face-to-face training in modules covering areas such as an introduction to leadership and management; fundamentals of managing high performance teams; and essential communication and interpersonal skills. The Santander UK Finance Programme is a three year programme designed to build our leaders of the future.

In addition to this, you could be invited to undertake various activities throughout the programme, such as:

  • An induction to your business
  • An induction to your division
  • The allocation of your own mentor and buddy
  • Meetings with members of the Executive Committee
  • Involvement in cross-divisional project work
  • Graduate-specific events
  • The production and publication of our graduate magazine

All of our graduate trainees are assessed on their individual performance and behaviours. As long as you demonstrate the required level of skills and behaviours and you have the passion and enthusiasm to succeed, then Santander UK could be perfect for you.
