What your work will entail

This is a very hands-on role, where you will:

• Get an initial understanding of the implications of change on key organisational levers such as organisation structures, productivity, management processes and systems amongst others.

• Be a key team member participating in business reviews buy-in discussions, from impact analysis to communication and implementation.

What we look for in you

We are looking for driven professionals with a keen interest in banking and operations, who have the following capabilities/experience:

• You must hold a 2:1 or above degree in a numerate degree such as Engineering, Maths or Sciences.

Santander Cards UK - Risk Graduate Programme

Introduction

The Santander Cards UK Credit Risk team are looking to add to their experienced team through the recruitment of graduate candidates to develop and support credit risk strategies and policies to manage business credit losses to agreed risk appetite levels. Candidates will also gain excellent experience in a strong credit risk management function that provides core technical and business knowledge skills that may subsequently be deployed in a longer term career within a Risk Management discipline or in a number of other functional areas

Summary Role Profile

Successful candidates will be working in a credit risk analyst role that encompasses accountability for the monitoring, development and continual evolution of risk mitigation and eligibility strategies. Responsibility for development, interpretation and presentation of management information to ensure delivery of strategy performance objectives along with real responsibility to assist the risk manager in ensuring delivery of required functionality & credit strategies.

There will be a requirement to work with cross-functional project teams to ensure timely and accurate delivery of credit strategy & business projects, along with occasional opportunity to present strategy proposals and initiatives for approval to senior management.

Structure & Content

The graduate programme will consist of placements in some of the following areas:

Acquisition Strategy

This involves production and communication of analysis for the design, monitoring and ongoing evolution of Acquisition strategies for the Santander Cards UK portfolio to senior managers within Risk and Client teams

Portfolio Management

This area is responsible for the design, monitoring and ongoing evolution of portfolio risk mitigation and eligibility strategies for the Santander Cards UK portfolio. It is also Accountable for the monitoring, development and continual evolution of portfolio risk mitigation and eligibility strategies - including proactive and reactive credit limit increases, pre-delinquency, re-issue / high risk closure criteria and product / credit eligibility criteria (including risk criteria and forecasts for re-pricing, balance transfers, high value & x-sell campaigns)

Loss Planning

This area is responsible for forecasting and ongoing evaluation of business credit loss performance for Santander Cards product portfolios across the UK and Ireland. Additionally responsible for production and interpretation of corporate, regulatory and business management information reports and capital adequacy strategy

Collections and Recoveries

This area is responsible for maximising the value of collected delinquent debt through the development of a range of collection and recovery strategies and involves working directly with Manufacturing teams to design and implement process improvements in collections and recoveries units across a range of areas - including but not limited to media used, time and frequency of actions, use of tools and data enhancements

Decision Systems

Contributes to Risk Management by taking responsibility for the risk decision system tools including NBSM, Probe SM, CSM and Strategyware. It also involves undertaking monitoring and analysis, producing recommendations, developing, testing and implementing solutions to optimise data and systems, including Collections, Re-Issue, Re-Pricing, Risk Scorecards, Marketing Strategy, Credit Limit Decreases & Credit Limit Increases across 11 portfolios.

Decision Science

Responsible for progressing agreed risk model developments, including, but not restricted to, propensity, profitability, response, limit allocation, collections/recoveries. Also to support the interface between Retail and Banking businesses and Santander Analytics for all risk scorecard builds and performance monitoring.

Training and Development

All graduates will begin their programme by attending the Santander Group induction and have central activities throughout the programme.

Training requirements will be specific to the role undertaken, but will involve SAS training. Training will be predominantly "on the job", with supplementary classroom and online courses as required. After the period of initial training, graduate trainees will also commence a series of personal development learning modules, which will help them to focus on developing the management and leadership skills, which should be valuable for their future career

All graduates will be allocated a Buddy, who will be available to settle the new graduate in to the department and organisation and answer any questions. You'll also be assigned to a senior member of the department who will act as a mentor to provide support through the programme and assist with career development.

At the end of the programme, the graduate will be supported in finding their next role, either within the department or elsewhere in the company/group.

Location

Graduates will be based in either London or Leeds. Occasional travel between UK based sites may be required

The programme, duration and location

The Marketing programme will see you complete a number of challenging placements over three years across several of our teams. These rotations will give you the opportunity to expand your knowledge and learn new skills by working with many different areas of the business. You'll work through customer analysis and insight, product & proposition development and post-product launch helping you to develop the full range of knowledge and tools you need to be a successful marketing professional.

Generally your placements will be located in our Head Office at Santander House in Milton Keynes but there will be opportunities to work at our major site in London.

Finance Programme

Our Finance roles will give you the opportunity to be part of a dynamic and progressive organisation, offering you real career development, whilst enabling you to contribute to business performance.

You'll gain outstanding accounting experience, from core financial accounting skills to complex modelling. You will develop your analytical and presentation skills and learn to manage stakeholders effectively.

The programme itself

This programme consists of four rotations, giving you a broad and varied experience of Santander before your final year concentrating on developing in-depth experience and skills in a more specialised area.

You'll be working at Trainee Accountant level in real roles within key parts of the finance function as you progress towards completing professional accountancy qualifications.

At every step, you'll find the work stimulating and experience-building.

Working in a clearly defined job area, you'll obtain and analyse data for modelling, test assumptions, or investigate technical problems.

You'll also provide technical support and advice to the business, helping to implement new standards in low risk areas and acting as the reference point for queries, ensuring the bank’s financial control framework is adhered to, as well as assisting in ensuring well-informed business decisions are made. This will develop your relationship building skills.

The work in detail

To give you an idea of the areas in which you'll gain exceptional experience here are the business areas you could find yourself working in during the scheme:

In Cost Analysis you will assist with the provision of quality management information on business costs; reviewing and challenging the business areas operating expenses and ensuring that they are accounted for correctly. You’ll analyse month and year end costs against budget and gain an understanding of key cost drivers and their business impact. Such analysis will enable you to provide insightful commentary and contribute to cost efficiencies. In this role you will gain a good understanding of the bank’s operating expenses and the different divisions within the organisation. This role will provide an opportunity to develop your relationship building skills with financial and non financial staff and expand your reporting skills.

Income Reporting is where you'll produce consolidated income reports for Santander management, review and challenge monthly income numbers. You will be expected to produce business monthly Profit and Loss accounts, and develop financial models to review and forecast product non interest income and net interest income. In this role you will develop an understanding of how banks generate income and how it is calculated, as well as developing your analytical skills.

In the Accounting Support area the team deal with accounting transactions for the main Retail bank and smaller subsidiaries. In this role you will be responsible for ensuring all monthly entries are accurate and reconciled to specific deadlines, liaising with the business and other Finance areas. You will also be responsible for completing process reviews for new tasks within the team and develop new solutions to improve efficiency. During this rotation you will gain a good knowledge of the general ledger and core accounting processes.

In Group Reporting you will be part of the team that is the central collection point for all statutory financial data. This role entails the planning and coordinating of Profit and Loss, Balance Sheet, Off Balance Sheet and Supplementary data and subsequent reporting to Santander and UK regulators. In this role you will also be involved collection of financial data disclosed in the quarterly, ½ yearly and annual reports and gain a good understanding of Santander group accounting systems and statutory reporting requirements.

The Treasury Reporting team is responsible for the reporting of all treasury subsidiaries statutory financial results to Group Reporting. You will be assisting with the detailed review of all accounting entries, providing commentary to explain significant activity and variances, as well as supporting analysis for the annual accounts. In this role you will develop your technical/statutory reporting skills, gain an understanding of our intercompany process and build relationships with the business, Santander and external audit staff

In the Regulatory Reporting team, you'll find yourself producing and distributing the daily Capital Adequacy Directive report to help supervise the total capital base effectively. You'll also produce and distribute the daily Cater Allen Investment Company report, weekly Capital Adequacy report by Sub Value Centre for Santander National Treasury Services, and the monthly Market Risk report. Then there's a variety of ad hoc analyses to reconcile differences, answer queries, update process notes, and identify and implement improvements to reports and processes. During this rotation you will develop your analytical skills and gain an understanding of regulatory capital reporting, Credit and Market risk.

Financial MI Group Reporting will provide you with a high level overview of the type of reports and presentations that are reviewed by the most senior executives in the organisation. You’ll learn the key disciplines required to consolidate, understand and communicate information from a large number of sources and often to tight deadlines. This is an exciting area of finance given that all output is reviewed, in detail by the Financial Controller and CEO. In this role you will develop a good overall understanding of our financial and business performance and gain a good understanding of how retail banking works.

In the Pricing team, you will contribute to detailed financial analysis on profitability, help to evaluate new product proposals and report retail product margins. Here, you'll be working closely with Marketing, Risk and other Finance teams to deliver projects successfully and inform business decision making. In this small and dynamic team, you will quickly learn how to demonstrate rational justifications for assumptions with supportive, well analysed evidence. In this rotation you will develop strong modelling and analytical skills, as well as building business relationships with non finance staff. The role in economics is designed to provide you with an introduction and some insight into how economic information and analysis is used by and can be of value to the business. More broadly, the economics teams is responsible for monitoring trends in the economy and major retail business areas and alerting key business stakeholders to key news and changes in those areas. Your role will comprise completing specific projects and also involvement in the day-to-day work of the team.

Location

Placements will be primarily at our head office in London, but for certain rotations you'll need to be willing to live and work in Milton Keynes or Leicester.

Internal Audit Programme

Starting your Santander career in Internal Audit is an unrivalled opportunity for you to work as part of a global team and learn all about how a bank operates and offers you real insight into our organisation.

The skills and knowledge that you'll develop as an Auditor are highly valued at the most senior levels within Santander and many of our future managers and leaders will come through the Audit path.

What's more, the regular movement of people to more senior roles is part of the Santander Internal Audit strategy. This provides the bank with highly skilled candidates who have excellent knowledge of risk management and control and it provides you with plenty of opportunity for promotion.

The programme itself:

You'll join us as a Trainee Auditor and will benefit from a structured development programme which is designed to give you a broad understanding of the key parts of our organisation.

This will include doing short work placements and working alongside more experienced auditors.

As Internal Audit is a global Santander function, you can expect to gain experience alongside Spanish colleagues from the wider group. You may also be assigned work with any of our audit teams.

We involve Trainee Auditors in a wide range of work including research and evaluation of different parts of the Santander business, testing and evaluation of processes and controls and making recommendations for improvements.

Successful performance should lead to your appointment as a Junior Auditor after around 12 months in the company. So you can see that this is a real job of work from day one, with the potential to make real and rapid progress.

Location:

The audit team is based at our Head Office in Triton Square, London. But as audits take place on sites all over the country, you can expect to spend time away on location. Exactly how much time will depend on nature and size of your audit.

Santander will provide you with hotel accommodation and pay your travelling costs. We will also give you an allowance in compensation for working away from home.

Training & development:

To begin with, you'll attend the same induction programme as all other graduates. Then, you'll start your structured development programme as a Trainee Auditor.

This will include your Induction to Audit, including work shadow, placements in key parts of Santander such as the branch network and other customer contact areas. You'll work with different audit teams in different places and you'll be given in-house training in audit methodology, quality and regulation as part of this valuable experience.

Included in your training will be the development of the 'soft' skills you'll need if you're to be an effective auditor. These include negotiation and influencing skills, report writing, communication and assertiveness.

You may also attend a career development programme which should help you to identify your strengths and areas for further development, and help you to plan the next steps in your career.

Qualifications:

With our support and sponsorship, by the end of the programme you should expect to have made substantial progress toward completion of ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), ACA (Association of Chartered Accountants) or CISA (Certified Information Systems Auditor) qualifications. Now you will be ready for promotion to Junior Auditor.

Eligibility for the programme:

In order to be considered for the Internal Audit Graduate intake, you must have, or expect to gain, a 2:1 degree or equivalent, in Finance/Accounting, IT, Business or another subject with a significant financial or accounting content.

Training

Our branches are the heart of our business. You will start your career in one of our branches to achieve a real understanding of what Santander is all about and our commitment to our customers. You will then head straight to one of our in-house 5 week training residential courses to take part in an accelerated learning programme to become a successful Personal Banking Adviser.

Back in the Branch

Once you come back in branch you’ll be capable of giving our customers all the guidance they need to realise their personal financial goals. This will involve engaging people from all walks of life, gathering information, matching requirements to products and closing the sale or referring the enquiry to a colleague.

What we are looking for

An assured and effective communicator, you will require the diplomacy to deal with the occasional customer complaint and the cash handling skills to coach counter staff, so you can expect variety and challenge every day.

You must be a graduate of any degree discipline, although a numerical or business-type degree would be helpful. Ideally you will also have experience of working with a variety of people in a team environment (such as university clubs, teams or a part-time job) or in a customer- facing role. You should be the type of person who thrives on targets and relishes the challenge of waking every morning not knowing what surprises the day with have in store. Finally, ambition is key, once you prove yourself as a success in this sales-orientated role, who knows where your career could take you in Santander. In return, you can expect a salary of £17,000 - £20,000, depending on location, plus bonuses and benefits.

Credit Risk Programme

Risk management, the consideration of risk versus reward, is at the heart of banking. For a bank to grow and be profitable it must take risks. However, for sustained profitability and a stable society the bank must choose the right risks to take. You will be part of a team that leads the bank in setting a sustainable strategy, ensuring that;

• Our strategy is resilient to economic threats.
• We identify the opportunities to maximise profit and gain advantage over our competitors.
• Our losses are minimised in whichever strategy is pursued.

Through this role we will develop your skills to enable you to solve complex business problems using practical solutions. You will take accountability for a specific area of credit risk, where you will shape policy, develop complex models and provide recommendations to the Board. We will provide the structure through the Santander Risk School to supply all your training requirements, from the technical of how to build a scorecard and program in SAS, to the softer skills in how to give a presentation or facilitate a meeting.

All importantly we will support your career development through providing a Personal Development Plan tailored to your requirements which is tracked in regular 1:1's. Every six months you will be provided with a formal rating to provide you with an assessment of your performance and half-yearly promotion panels are held so as to advance your responsibilities at the right time.

The programme itself

You'll join us as a risk analyst and will be placed into one of our eight teams. Here you will be assigned a mentor to guide you through the early days, provided with a formal induction process to get your bearings and given both external and on-the-job training to quickly bring you up to speed.

Skills you can expect to develop include model building using linear and logistic regression, programming using SAS and VBA, and softer skills through presentations and problem solving.

Every six months there will be the opportunity to rotate into one of the other risk teams to increase your knowledge, and there may be opportunities for secondments abroad to Spain, Brazil or the US to see how other Santander risk functions operate.

The teams

There are a variety of teams within credit risk which you can be a part of:

• Application fraud.
• Basel.
• Collections and recoveries.
• Profits analysis and pre-approvals.
• Provisioning and forecasting.
• Scorecard development.
• Secured and unsecured portfolio management.

You will be based at Santander House in Milton Keynes

Eligibility for the Programme

In order to be considered for the Credit Risk graduate intake, you must have or expect to gain a 2:1 degree or equivalent in a numerate discipline (Maths, Statistics, Sciences, Engineering, Economics).

In addition you are required to possess exceptional numerical reasoning skills with a passion for business analysis. You need to have strong communication, relationship and influencing skills with the ability to explain the results of complex analysis to a non-technical audience and have the confidence to bring change in areas out of your control.
